science and faith (a poem)

A pastor asked me to write a poem about the relationship between science and faith.
This is not an apologetics poem.
This poem comes from the place of wondering and admiration.
Here is what I came up with …

I have a lot of questions all beginning with how and why
And a few more prayers still waiting for a reply

I’m trying to sort out the noise from the truth
And i’m trying my best to be faithful like Ruth

I don’t have an answer for why there are stars in space
And I don’t know how to keep from feeling like I’m all over the place

But when i step back and see
I cant help but believe
Beauty is what God has for you and me.

The sun rises and sets
The stars shine and the flowers bloom
the seasons change and the mountains move

I don’t know how He has the whole world in His hands
I don’t have an answer for when the world began
and I am beginning to see that
we do not need every fact or answer to stand

It is beauty that leads me to believe
He is doing something more in me and with me and for me
then meets these eyes.

And I have come to realize …
I may never understand the infinite beauty found below the sun and stars
I may never have an answer for cancer, the Big Bang, evolution, or pain
And I may never fully understand how I came to breathe and be
But maybe just maybe something more is happening than I can see.

Beyond all my answers and questions, my worries and your suggestions
Maybe just maybe something more is happening than I can see.

For all I do not know, I have come to believe
His mercy remains a mystery
And His Grace goes beyond our grasp
And His love stretches beyond our past
And this
As hard as it is to believe
This changes everything.
